Definition:
A tick-borne disease characterized by fever, headache, myalgias, anorexia, and occasionally rash. Causal agents belong to the Rickettsiales order and include Erhlichia spp.; in humans, the disease is caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum; in horses, it is caused by Neorickettsia risticii.
