Definition
-
Even-toed, hooved, mammals with a four chambered stomach (rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum). In adults, the largest chamber is the rumen, anatomically different from, but often closely associated with the reticulum, and the reticulum and rumen sometimes referred to singularly as the reticulorumen. The abomasum, the last chamber prior to the small intestine, is an acid producing organ similar to non-ruminant mammals. Important agricultural ruminant species include goats, sheep, and cattle. Horns or antlers may or may not be present in both males and females.
