Definition:
Intracellular proteins that reversibly bind hydrophobic ligands including: saturated and unsaturated fatty acids; eicosanoids; and retinoids. They are considered a highly conserved and ubiquitously expressed family of proteins that may play a role in the metabolism of lipids.
