A highly conserved, multicomponent secretion system found in many Gram-negative bacteria that are plant and animal pathogens. This system transports effector molecules directly from the cytoplasm to the cell surface when the pathogen comes in close contact with the host cell. It is evolutionarily related to the bacterial flagellum.
