Literally, splitting fruit. A dry compound fruit, as in the mallow family, splitting up at maturity into several indehiscent 1-seeded carpels (mericarps); the peculiar dry twin-fruit of umbellifer, or parsnip family (cremocarp) is a form of schizocarp.
