The layer or mantle of loose, non-cohesive or cohesive rock material, of whatever origin, that nearly everywhere forms the surface of the land and rests on bedrock. It comprises rock waste of all sorts; volcanic ash; glacial drift; alluvium; wind-blown deposits; and accumulations of vegetation, such as peat and soil.
