Divalent metals - commonly cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc -that form less soluble sulfides than does iron or manganese and are solubilized during the acidification step (0.5m HCl for 1 hour) used in the determination of acid volatile sulfides in sediments.
