An acute, highly contagious, often fatal infectious disease caused by an orthopoxvirus characterized by a biphasic febrile course and distinctive progressive skin eruptions. Vaccination has succeeded in eradicating smallpox worldwide. Enfermedad infecciosa aguda, muy contagiosa y a menudo mortal, causada por un ortopoxvirus, caracterizada por un curso febril bifásico y erupciones cutáneas que se extienden. Mediante la vacunación se ha logrado erradicar esta enfermedad en todo el mundo.
