Cepas de Escherichia coli que presentan rasgos de virulencia que les permiten invadir, colonizar e inducir enfermedades en tejidos que se hallan fuera del tracto gastrointestinal. Producen infecciones urinarias (Escherichia coli uropatógena), meningitis neonatal, sepsis, neumonía e infecciones de la herida quirúrgica.
