Definition
-
Non-ribosomal peptides are microbial secondary metabolites, synthesized independently without mRNA and ribosomal machinery. These peptides use non-ribosomal peptide synthetases, amino acids and other metabolite precursors for their biosynthesis. These are often produced in the cytosol of bacteria and fungi and some possess drug-like properties.
