Any of various enzymatically catalyzed post-translational modifications of peptides or proteins in the cell of origin. These modifications include carboxylation; hydroxylation; acetylation; phosphorylation; methylation; glycosylation; ubiquitination; oxidation; proteolysis; and crosslinking and result in changes in molecular weight and electrophoretic motility.
