A phenomenon that, in the course of evolution, characterizes enzymes that are able to maintain their catalytic capability on the same chemical reaction, even though their amino acid sequences and/or amino acid composition are modified via mutagenesis and/or natural selection. The properties of these enzymes (such as kinetics and electrophoretic mobility) can be differentiated by physical, chemical and immunological techniques.
