An ecological footprint is a measurement of the area, whether land- or water-based, required to support a certain level and/or type of consumption by an enterprise, activity, individual or population. The footprint calculation assesses the resources (e.g.the amount of water, energy, nutrients or land, [natural capital]) required for the production of what is being consumed and the resources required to assimilate the resulting waste.
