UFAW is an internationally recognized, independent, scientific and educational animal welfare charity based in the United Kingdom concerned with improving knowledge and understand of animals' needs. UFAW published W.M.S. Russell and Rex Burch's book, "The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique," in 1959, in which the concept of the 3Rs (reduction, replacement, and refinement of use of animal models in research) was first codified.
