The most dominant and coherent component of the intraseasonal variability in the tropical atmosphere; characterized by a strong eastward propagation of atmospheric features, with a typical period of 30-60 days. The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) may influence the tropical climate and its short-term variability by modulating the timing and strength of El Nino - Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, contributing to the mean heat budget of the western Pacific, and regulating the annual cycle of the tropical western Pacific, especially the Australian summer monsoon.
