  • Information A duripan (L. durus, hard; meaning hardpan) is a subsurface horizon that is cemented by illuvial silica to the degree that less than 50 percent of the volume of air-dry fragments slake in water or during prolonged soaking in acid HCl). Duripans vary in the degree of cementation by silica. In addition, they commonly contain accessory cements, chiefly calcium carbonate.
