An office within the National Institutes of Health (US) which oversees the use of animals in research at facilities that receive Public Health Service federal funding under the authority of the Health Research Extension Act of 1985. OLAW issues assurances-contracts between it and the research institution-which allows that institution to utilize animal models for a set period while abiding with animal welfare standards.
